I first went to Canada in 2000 and we had to go out of our way to get them to stamp our passports and when they did, they wrote "(courtesy)" next to the stamp.
This is the first time in my life I haven't had a current passport -- I feel so TRAPPED! Especially now that I can't escape to Canada or Mexico! I was waiting to lose a few pounds before committing to a photo that will represent the next ten years but I'm gonna have to just bite the bullet.
Well, maybe i'm just spoiled, but growing up in Detroit you just had to go thru the "interogation" which mainly consisted of the guard asking your citizenship and then seeing if you were drunk or looked like a killer. But now that the terrorist have won, you have to have a passport just to pass from Detroit to Windsor.
Granted this couldn't have been done without the Canadian goverment's involvement, but to suggest that this was a Canadian initiative seems disingenuous - forgive me if you are intending to be sarcastic.
Edit: I see from your new comments that perhaps you weren't being as abrasive about Canada as it felt from your post. It's a crummy situation all around that we can't drive through Detroit in friendship any longer.
I was mostly just being silly and stupid.. My girlfriend wanted to go to canada when we are up in detroit next month, but there isn't enough time for us to get our passports.. thats mostly why.
There may be a higher fee for the license, but it should relieve us from buying a passport just to head across the border. You guys should've applied for licenses with your folks address while you were here!

Note this 2005 article in the CBC entitled "US Will Demand Passports from Canadians" - Canadians have been having to carry a passport to enter the US for awhile:

And you know what, I still love your country.

Like many Canadians my national pride runs deep, but I'm no slouch at saying I'm sorry.

CBC channel 9 (from Windsor) taught me that there is GOOD news in the world too
